As I published the natal chart of Tomohisa Yamashita, I will be doing follow ups to see where I went wrong and where I was right. A few days ago Yamashita published in his jweb that his knees were giving him trouble. I remembered to have written something about joint related problems in my publication. So I went back to read it. This is what I wrote:

For Neptune in the sixth house, there’s real danger from medically administered drugs and care is needed with household gas appliances. Care is needed when dealing with addictive substances. There is a heightened risk of injuries to the feet. The area of the hip (joint) is indicated as prone to wear faster.
Sleep is raised in importance with this position, as he will need it to prevent a whole range of ailments. The square between Mars and Jupiter may indicate a higher than usual need for Vitamine B12 and Folic acid; it rules the production of red bloodcells. It may also cause accidents since there’s a tendency to take risks.

I identified it as being the hip joint, the knees are a bit lower than that! So while I identified ‘joint’ as being a problem due to the affliction of Neptune in the 6th house (health) I had attributed the body parts more to Pisces/Saggitarius than to Capricorn. I’m now unsure why I wrote it up that way since Neptune is obviously in Capricorn!! I do notice my approach to astrology is from time to time “Uranian” (only minding the aspects), which may have played a part in this. If you want to see how obvious this should have been to me try this query on google. That’s what we call a ‘slap ones forehead’ moment.

Close I’d say, but in the eyes of many probably not close enough. However, I think I’ve gained some more confidence in pinpointing where in the chart health problems exist as at least I picked Neptune out of all the objects in the chart and allocated the lower part of the body. Pretty good astrology in my book, I just need to keep my eye on the signs!

I decided to make this tutorial because the art of manually calculating a natal chart is getting lost. It’s very important for beginning astrologers to master at least the calculation of the natal chart by hand. It gives important insight into the movement of signs and planets and will later help develop a better understanding of transitions and progressions. You will have missed something if you use online calculators like Astrodienst or astrology programs.

What you will need for this tutorial is the following:

The only thing I won’t be able to help with is the house tables, since I didn’t find them online. It is recommended to buy an Ephemeris with Placidus house tables for all latitudes, since you will need to reference it often in predictive astrology.

The order in which a natal chart is calculated is as follows:

  1. Determining latitude and longitude of the place of birth.
  2. Determining GMT + Local Time.
  3. Determining Star Time with the Local Time and Longitude of birth.
  4. Looking up the house positions using the Star Time and Latitude.
  5. Determining Planetary positions with the GMT and log tables.
  6. Drawing up the chart.

Below the cut, all is explained. I will be taking my own birth information as an example. The details are: Heerlen (the Netherlands), 31st of August 1981, 17:50 hours.

Are you ready to begin?
